Wilmeta C. Massmann, age 90 of rural Villard, died Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at the Golden Ridge Assisted Living in Alexandria. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 7th at Villard United Methodist Church in Villard. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 6th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in the Lake Amelia Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Wilmeta Christine Massmann was born August 2, 1926 in Hudson Township, Palo Alto County, Iowa, to William and Engle (Weiner) Stoltz. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1943. Wilmeta furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning a BA in elementary education. She taught in Iowa, Colorado and Minnesota.
On November 27, 1957 Wilmeta was united in marriage to Dale Massmann at St. John's Lutheran Church in Villard. The couple made their home on a farm west of Villard where they farmed and raised their seven children. After getting married, Wilmeta stopped teaching to help farm and raise her family. She taught herself to cook, garden and can her produce. She was a wonderful cook and made everything from scratch. She will be remembered for being a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, who would do anything to help her family. When her son needed a kidney due to health reasons, Wilmeta donated one of hers. She continued to live on the farm until recently when she needed help with her daily care. Wilmeta passed away November 2, 2016 at the Golden Ridge Assisted Living in Alexandria.
She is survived by her husband of almost 59 years, Dale Massmann of Villard; daughter, Kristin (Larry) Gabrielson of Alexandria; sons: Mark (Sandy) Massmann of Glenwood, Scott (Shelly) Massmann of Villard, Rodney (Gail) Massmann of Forada, Jim (Amy) Massmann of Glenwood and Todd (Paula) Massmann of Brandon, SD; 13 grandchildren: Jeri Penas, Brian Schmiess, Eric Schmiess, Jessica Massmann, Brandon Massmann, Austin Massmann, James Gabrielson, Paige Gabrielson, Coty Massmann, Stephanie (Dominic) Baker, Jordan Massmann, Abbie Massmann and Ryan Massmann; 6 great-grandchildren: Rylan & Caden Penas, Silas & Sophie Gossy, Sutter Baker and Riley Schmiess; brother, Bill (Janet) Schnetzer of Villard; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wilmeta is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kathryn Massmann Schmiess; and brothers, Charlie Stoltz, John Enger, Lloyd Schnetzer, and Orville Schnetzer.
