Darrel Bruss Obituary

Darrel R. Bruss, age 92, of Glenwood, formerly of Kensington, died Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Glenwood Retirement Village. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 2nd at First Lutheran Church in Kensington, with Rev. Irv Arnquist officiating. Visitation will be beginning at 11:00 A.M. and running until the time of service. Private family inurnment will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Cottonwood, MN at a later date. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Darrel Roger Bruss was born on April 8, 1930, in Posen Twp., MN. He was the first of nine children born to parents Gerold A. and Mildred E. (LaFrentz) Bruss. He attended school in Wood Lake, where he graduated from high school. On January 25, 1955, he was united in marriage to Mildred Lucille Evers. They were blessed with five children, Valarie, Bradley, Clayton, Ledell, and Lyla. Over the years, Darrel and Mildred made their home in Wood Lake, Alexandria, Lake Mary, and Kensington. Darrel was a carpenter and worked primarily in the construction industry. While living in Wood Lake, he was employed by Great Plains, and in the Alexandria area he worked for Lee Hens Construction, Dennis Conn Construction, and Ken's Construction (Ken Nelson). Following his retirement from construction, he worked for Green View doing rest area maintenance and, as a greeter for Walmart.

While living in Wood Lake, Darrel was a volunteer fireman. He enjoyed occasional trips to the casino, playing bingo, and assembling jigsaw puzzles. His hobbies included building lawn art and birdhouses.

Darrel moved to the Villa in Glenwood in late 2016, and was most recently living at Glenwood Estates. He passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Glenwood Retirement Village under the care of Glacial Ridge Hospice. He will be greatly missed.

Darrel is survived by his children, Valerie (Dave) Kalina of Alexandria, Bradley (Sue) Bruss of Olathe, Kansas, Clayton (Lynn) Bruss of Kensington, Ledell (Linda) Bruss of St. Stephen, and Lyla (Max) Radil of Alexandria; 14 grandchildren, Charity (John) Mix, Chad Kalina, Chris (Sonja Thompson) Kalina, Brent (Julie) Bruss, Stephanie (Donnie) Bowers, Joey (Amie) Bruss, Jason Bruss, Jeff (Jen Froemming) Bruss, Brian (Stacy) Bruss, Brenden (Katie) Bruss, Matt (Tracy Peabody) Radil, Mindy (Gary) Fults, Dwight (Roni) Radil, Darren (Elli) Radil; 19 (soon to be 20) great-grandchildren, Avery and Brooklyn Bowers, Halle and Hannah Bruss, Cole Bruss, Rose Borash, Connor, Callie and Penelope Bruss, James Vance, Michael, Amber and Emily Peabody, Evan and Sophia Radil, Mariah Fults, Ethan, Trent Radil and Eli Thompson; six siblings, Donna Rowberg, Ron (Mary) Bruss, Lee (Lois) Bruss, Marlys Iverson, Wes (Linda) Bruss, and and Charlotte (Dale) Donner; two sisters-in-law, Mildred (Mrs. Dean) Bruss and Jane (Mrs. Stanley) Bruss; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mildred (in 2008); a grandson, Jamie Bruss; two brothers, Orden “Dean” and Stanley; two brothers-in-law, James Rowberg and Roy Iverson; and one sister-in-law, Geri (Mrs. Wes) Bruss.
