David Alfred Schramm was born on December 23, 1927, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, to parents Edward and Freda (Bielke) Schramm. David was the third of four children. His early years were spent in Hutchinson, where he graduated from high school in 1946.

As a lifeguard at Lake Marion in 1942, he met the love of his life, Shirley Mann. They were married on June 8, 1952, in Brownton, Minnesota. The couple began their married life in a cabin on Belle Lake. They lived in various towns, including Pillager, Brownton, and Swanville, before settling in Glenwood in 1958. They were blessed with four children: Julie, Jeff, Janae, and John.

David followed in his big brother Earl’s footsteps when he joined the United States Marine Corps on August 19, 1946. He served honorably and received his discharge on March 29, 1948, He continued to follow in his big brother’s footsteps when he pursued a career in education. David earned a teaching degree from Gustavus Adolphus College and later, a Master's degree from St. Cloud State.

As a teacher, David touched the lives of countless students in Pillager, MN, before joining his father-in-law at the First State Bank in Brownton Minnesota. Eventually, he returned to education in Swanville and then in Glenwood in 1958, where he taught 7th-grade math until his retirement in 1984. Beyond the classroom, David's influence extended to various sports, where he coached and refereed.

David loved the great outdoors. Before their children were born, David and Shirley engaged in hunting, fishing, camping, and canoeing. Beginning in 1971, they built a cabin on Ban Lake in Northern Minnesota, a place for family gatherings and cherished memories. David was an active member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, demonstrating his commitment to wildlife and conservation.  David passed on his love for the outdoors to his family and many close friends.

David loved ice fishing, spearing, snowmobiling and skiing. He managed the Ski Chalet in Glenwood on behalf of the city for several decades. It was his desire that people of all ages would learn to ski. On his 80th birthday, it was his request that his entire family meet in Jackson Hole for a ski vacation and birthday celebration. He thoroughly enjoyed skiing and snowboarding with his extended family.

David is lovingly remembered by his children, Julie (Mark) Rohde, Jeff Schramm, Janae Schramm, and John (Linda) Schramm; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who were fortunate to have been part of his journey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Shirley, who died on June 10, 2020, and his siblings Earl, Constance (Koni), and Delphine.

David Alfred Schramm lived a life of love, learning, and laughter. He will be deeply missed, but cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
