David Ellwood Armstrong, known affectionately as “Buzzard” to his friends and family, was born on October 20, 1955, in Glenwood, MN to Ellwood and Laurel (Anderson) Armstrong. He was the fourth of eight children born to the couple. His life was spent in the town of his birth, except for a brief time during his childhood when the family lived in Cyrus. He attended Glenwood schools where he laid the foundation for a life full of community and connection.
In 1972, David started dating Nancy Mithun, the new girl at school. She wasn’t entirely a stranger to David. He’d first met her the summer of his 6th grade year on the school playground when she was in Glenwood visiting her grandparents. The two never forgot about that first meeting and they quickly reconnected after her family moved to town. On January 29, 1976, David and Nancy were united in marriage in Minneapolis. They made their home in Glenwood and were blessed with four children.
After high school, David embarked on a career that began with Ogdahl Construction, working diligently alongside Lester for many years. His strong work ethic and skillset led him to Potash, a local fertilizer company, before he found his niche at Clyde Machines. There, David honed his craft as a welder until a neck injury in 1996 led him to an early retirement.
David's life was one marked by dedication, love, and a passion for the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was often found in the tranquility of nature, a place where he felt most at home. His love for these pursuits was not just a hobby but a way of life that he eagerly shared with the younger generations. David's legacy includes the many beginner tackle boxes he collected and stocked, ensuring that each child in the family had the means to experience the joy of fishing. He loved to tease and joke with the children and they loved visits with “Buzzard”.
David's interests extended beyond the lakes and forests; he was a fan of Western movies, wildlife tv programs, and leisurely drives through the countryside. His home was a hub of warmth, laughter and conversation, where friends knew that a quick visit would inevitably turn into a long and enjoyable chat over coffee. David's ability to reel anyone into a meaningful conversation was one of his many gifts.
David died at the St Cloud Hospital in St Cloud on Saturday November 1, 2025, just weeks after his 70th birthday celebration.
David’s generous and kind nature drew people to him. He was a pillar in his family, a loving husband to his wife, Nancy and a guiding light to his children, Jeremy (Axeen), Jodi, Chad, and Jesse (Tiffany). David's joy was multiplied with the arrival of each grandchild, including Ashlee, Zachary (Royal), Morgan, Triston (Mickey), Brayden, Evan and Owen, and each great-grandchild, including Teddy, Ellie, Ellert and Astrid, who became the light of his life and his pride and joy.
Other family members left to mourn David's passing include his sister, Deb (Charlie) Reigel; brothers, Lonnie, Wayne, and Dan (Lori) Armstrong; sisters-in-law, Judy and Debbie; and brother-in-law, Norman Wegener; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Ellwood and Laurel; his sister, Linda Wegener; two brothers, Dennis and Joel; and sister-in-law, Marsha Armstrong.
David's story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved, a testament to the man he was and the impact he had on all who crossed his path. Blessed be his memory.
