Delbert D. Buller

Delbert Buller, age 86 of Cyrus, died Monday, June 18, 2019 at the West Wind Village Care Center in Morris. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Haven Mennonite Church in rural Starbuck. Visitation will also be at the church on Thursday, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Delbert Dean, our dear husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, the oldest son of Menno J and Edna Schroeder Buller was born on October 18, 1932 at Manter, Kansas.  He quietly slipped away at the West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota on June 17, 2019 at the age of 86 years. 

Delbert's childhood years were spent in Kansas, Southern Alabama, and later in Winton, California where he received his schooling. During his teenage years he worked on farms in Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas. 

As a young teenager, Delbert realized his lost condition and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.  He was baptized by Min. Frank H. Wenger on February 5, 1945, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite at Livingston, California.  This faith was precious to him. Although life was not always easy, he was faithful to the end.

In 1952, Delbert met me, Velma Jean Koehn, his future companion, in Scott City, Kansas. We were married on June 22, 1952 at the Lone Tree Mennonite Church, Galva, Kansas, by Minister Ervin Nightengale. We lived in Scott City, Kansas for several years in our early married life.  Later he worked in Newton, Kansas at a trailer factory. 

In 1963, he pursued his dream of farming and we moved to Almena, Wisconsin where we spent 24 years and raised our five children. 

In 1987, after our farm sold, we moved to Kidron, Ohio, where he worked for Troyer's Home Pantry delivering baked goods.  He enjoyed interacting with the customers he learned to know along his daily routes. 

Upon retirement in the spring of 1997, we moved to the Starbuck, Minnesota area where our youngest son and daughter resided.  The first summer there he enjoyed helping with the work of building the new Lake Haven Church.  Summertime found him tending his garden and doing small wood working projects.  He gave away many cooling racks and wooden crates. 

Delbert loved singing, even though in later years he lost his singing voice.  Still, he said, he had not lost his song. 

When health issues prevented physical activities, Delbert did a lot of reading.  He was always glad to see family and friends, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 After caring for Delbert at home as long as we could, he was admitted to West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota.  Even though he would have wished to remain in his home, he received good care in the Villa.  The personnel appreciated his cheerfulness and ready smile. 

Delbert gradually became weaker and the last few days were very painful, requiring sedation.  He longed to go Home to be with the Lord and his wish was granted a few days short of our 67th Anniversary.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Velma; his children: Diana and Harvey Lehman, Dalton, Ohio; Harlan and Elvira, Murtaugh, Idaho; Carl and Jan, Scotia, Nebraska; Ron and Cindy, Ward, South Dakota; Marcia and Leonard Zimmerman, Morris, Minnesota; 22 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; two brothers;  Don and Kathryn Buller, Stover, Missouri; Floyd and Pat Buller,  Amarillo, Texas, one sister; Wilda and Sid Nightengale, Atwater, California. Sisters in-law; Gloria Buller, Egypt, Mississippi; Marilyn and Howard Martin, Okolona, Mississippi; Maryellyn and Archie Stenzel, Marion, Kansas; brothers in-law; Verlin and Velma Koehn, Almena, Wisconsin; Maynard and Ruth Koehn, Inman, Kansas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister and one great grandson.
