Donald "Skip" Humphrey, Jr. Obituary

Donald “Skip” Humphrey, Jr. age 62, of Cyrus, and formerly of Brooten, died at home on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, under the loving care of his family and Knute-Nelson Hospice. A private family memorial service celebrating his life will be held this week. A public memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Donald “Skip” Humphrey, Jr. was born in Troy, Ohio, on June 4, 1958, to Donald John and Dorothea (Shepherd) Humphrey. He was welcomed home by his three sisters, Sharol, Neva, and Linda. As a young man, Skip attended school in Ohio and Minnesota. He served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota and worked various jobs before training to drive an 18 wheeler.

On July 19, 1990, Skip was united in marriage to Diane Marie Hanson in Rapid City, SD. They made their home in the Brooten area and were blessed with one son, Patrick. Skip and Diane later divorced. On March 17, 2006, he married his longtime friend, Patricia Ann Olson in Huntsville, Alabama. The two made their home in Cyrus, Minnesota.

Skip was most recently self-employed as an over-the-road truck driver. This career afforded him the opportunity to travel all over the United States, but often meant long periods of separation from family and many important occasions were missed. It was a job that he both loved and hated until the bitter end.

Skip enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping. He loved spending time with family and was proud of his son, Patrick. He also enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Deoge, who brought him comfort and peace as his health failed.

In March of this year Skip was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, which he fought valiantly. He passed away at home; surrounded by those he loved, on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. His family is grateful for the wonderful care and support provided by Knute-Nelson Hospice.

Skip is survived by his wife of 14 years, Patricia, of Cyrus; his son, Patrick Humphrey of Brooten; his three sisters, Sharol Coder of Owensboro, KY, Neva (Don) Welsh of Huntsville, AL, and Linda (James) Welch-Walker, of Owensboro, KY; one aunt, Dorothy Schlotterbeck of Lewisburg, OH; one uncle, Richard (Brenda) Shepherd of Hopkinsville, KY; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorothea.
