Dorothy J. (Bergland) Olson

Dorothy J. Olson, age 83 of Glenwood, died Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. A memorial gathering with family and friends will be Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the dining room at Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood. Inurnment will be at a later date in New London, Minnesota. 

Dorothy Jane Olson, the daughter of Otto and Beatrice (Pelky) Bergland was born September 13, 1934 in New London, Minnesota. She grew up in New London where she attended school and graduated from New London High School.

On July 3, 1955, Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald “Mickey” Olson in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The couple lived in Minneapolis and Duluth before settling in Glenwood in 1959. This marriage was blessed with four daughters. Dorothy and Mickey shared 37 years of marriage before Mickey passed away in 1992.

When her children were young, Dorothy attended Willmar Beauty School and graduated with a degree in cosmetology. Dorothy and Mickey owned and operated Whimpy’s Café along with Dorothy had, Dorothy’s Beauty Shop and Mickey had his barber shop. After they sold the businesses, Dorothy worked at Pamida in Glenwood. She continued to work there until she retired.

Dorothy was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, the Glenwood American Legion, VFW and fire department auxiliary.  She enjoyed playing darts, bowling, watching all types of sports and visiting with family and friends. She will be remembered for her witty sense of humor, her laugh, and her famous rum cake and lefsa. Dorothy passed away June 10, 2018 at the Glenwood Retirement Village.

She is survived by her daughters: Robin Olson of California, MD, Candy Collins of Perham, Dawn Olson of California, MD, and Sherri Kazda of Glenwood; grandchildren: Josh (Mindy) Collins, Chris (Sarah) Rushing, Marianne (Jon) Bivens, Sarah Collins, Cherice Collins, and Tanya (Kelly) Srock; 5 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; sister, June (Andy) Olson of Willmar and Otis (Carol) Bergland of Lansing, KS; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mickey Olson; sisters and their husbands, Viola (Chet) Lohn and Flossie (Carl) Ardoff and a brother, Floyd Bergland.
