Freddie Weispfennig Obituary

Freddie Albin Weispfennig was born on December 19, 1930, in Glenwood, MN. He was the first of two sons born to Albin and Alma (Jacobs) Weispfennig. Freddie and his younger brother, Loris, grew up on the family farm five miles east of Glenwood. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran in Villard. He was confirmed on May 24, 1945 at home since he was the only one in his confirmation class. Freddie attended public school in Glenwood, where he graduated with the Class of 1948. As a result of his father's asthma, and an earlier bout with tuberculosis which resulted in treatment at a sanitarium, Freddie had to take over the responsibilities of running the family farm as a young adult.

On August 20, 1955, Freddie was united in marriage to Marlys Joan Polzine at St John's Lutheran Church in Villard. After their marriage they made their home on Freddie’s family farm, where they raised their three children, Diane, Edward and Deb. Freddie farmed in partnership with his brother, Loris, for over 40 years. They were early users of irrigation, installing the first center pivot irrigation system in Pope County. This allowed them to plant green beans, sweet corn, potatoes and other field crops.

Freddie served on the Glenwood Township Board and was an election judge for many years. He was active at his church, St John’s Lutheran, where he taught Sunday school and held all officer positions. He also enjoyed playing on the church dartball and softball teams. Recently, while living at the Villa, he organized Bible studies for the residents. As a couple, Freddie and Marlys enjoyed traveling and visited many states, including Alaska, which was their "dream trip". He also enjoyed going to old tractor shows, thrashing festivals, golf and fishing.

Freddie will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He especially enjoyed being involved in the lives of his grandsons, never missing any of their activities or milestones.

Freddie and Marlys shared 66 years of marriage before her death on Christmas Eve 2021. In the months since her passing, Freddie missed her terribly and he looked forward to being reunited with her in heaven. He passed away at Glenwood Retirement Village on June 8, 2022, at the age of 91.

Freddie is survived by two daughters, Diane (Kevin) O'Donnell of Richfield and Deb (Jeff) Budzisz of Bloomington; one son, Edward (Marvelle) Weispfennig of Glenwood; two grandchildren, Callen (Alysia) and Brady (Melissa) Weispfennig; and two great-grandchildren, Liam and Adalyn Weispfennig; his brother, Loris (Doris) Weispfennig of Villard; one sister-in-law, Barb Fegan of Buda, TX; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Alma, and his wife, Marlys.

Memorials may be sent to Glacial Ridge Hospice, 219 1st St SE, Glenwood MN 56334 or St John's Lutheran Church, P O Box 36, Villard MN 56385.
