Jean Marie Holten, the youngest of eight children to Arnold and Rachel (Norby) Holten, was born on February 9th, 1951, in Starbuck, Minnesota. She graduated from Starbuck High School. Jean met James Goehring while still in high school, and the two wrote letters while he was overseas, serving during the Vietnam War. Upon Jimmy’s return, the two were married in Minneapolis in January of 1970. At the time of James’ passing in August of 2022, the two had been married for 52 years. They had two children together, Chad and Rachel, and raised them in Fridley, Minnesota.
Jean’s primary employment was First National Bank in Minneapolis where she started in the vault and eventually became a manager in the credit card division. Shortly after First National Bank became US Bank, Jimmy received permission to work remotely and the two of them tore down the old cabin on Lake Minnewaska and built a new home. They then sold their long-time home in Fridley and moved back to Glenwood to live on the lake full-time.
Jean loved to bowl and she and Jimmy were in bowling leagues for many years with good friends Kathy, Mike, Shelly, and her older brother Otto. She was a big Vikings fan. Living and dying by every pass from her favorite player, “Touchdown” Tommy Kramer. Every Sunday was a raucous event during football season in the Goehring home. She loved the Minnesota State Fair and family gatherings where she especially loved to dance to her brothers and friends as they played live country music.
Jean was sassy and smart-witted. She was always poking at her coworkers, friends and family. It was truly an endearing quality that people loved.
Jean passed away peacefully in the home of her daughter Rachel in Eagan, Minnesota while receiving hospice care. She was 74 years old.
Jean is survived by her son Chad (Heidi) of Lindstrom; her daughter Rachel (Scott) of Eagan, her grandchildren: Ryan Munson, Ayda Goehring, Judah Goehring, RaeAnn Goehring, Gwenyth Bodnar, Levi Goehring and Charlie Bodnar. Her sisters: Priscilla Loen, Barbara Owen; her brother: Kenny Holten; her sisters-in-law: Patty Zafke, Donna Martin, Tammy Goehring, Carol Holten, Joann Holten and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James, her brothers Gerald, Ray and Otto Holten, her sister Arlene Stoneburg and her sister-in-law Kathy Gilbertson.
