John Grundseth Obituary

John Grundseth, age 86 of Belgrade and formerly of rural Brooten, died Friday, July 31, 2020 the Belgrade Nursing Home. A private family service, led by Pastor Ron Knutson, was held at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten, with burial in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. 

John Arthur Grundseth, son of John Arthur and Ida (Torjuson) Grundseth, was born on October 26, 1933, in Brooten, Minnesota. He grew up near Brooten on the family farm in Lake Johana Township, Pope County, along with his older brother, Bruce, and younger brother, Tom. He attended grade school in District 4 and Brooten High School. John was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Brooten, where he was a longtime member. After high school John entered the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge he returned home to Brooten, where he lived with his parents, first on their farm and later in Brooten.

After arriving home from his military service, John farmed for a time before purchasing road grating equipment which he used to operate a small road maintenance business in the Brooten area. In 1985, John moved back to the family farm. On August 6, 2011, John was united in marriage to Dona Femrite at Sunburg Free Lutheran Church near Sunburg. The two made their home on John’s farm near Brooten. Dona passed away unexpectedly on March 19, 2019. Following her death, John became a resident at Belgrade Nursing Home.

John’s hobbies included hunting and fishing. He earned his pilot’s license and loved giving people rides. His plane of choice was a Cessna 172 airplane. John enjoyed visiting with family and friends and those who knew him will remember him for his kindness.

John passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020, at the Belgrade Nursing Home, having lived to the age of 86. His family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Belgrade Nursing Home for the excellent care he received at their facility. 

John is survived by his brother, Thomas Grundseth of Brooten; nephew, Tim Grundseth of Brooten; niece, Marin Grundseth of Glenwood; and niece, Paula (Leidig) Wipf of Gillette, WY; along with several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ida; his wife, Dona; a brother, Bruce, and his wife, Helen (Halvorson) Grundseth; a nephew, Keven Grundseth; and sister-in-law, Deb (Sagedahl) Grundseth.
