John H. Imsdahl, age 89 of Brooten died Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.
John Henry Imsdahl, son of Arthur and Irene (Anderson) Imsdahl, was born February 7, 1932, in Brooten, MN. He grew up in Brooten, along with his older brother, James. John was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and attended Brooten Public School, where he graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1949. While in high school John participated in choir, band, football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead where he majored in mathematics, history, and political science. He was a member of the Alpha Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1953.
After college, John spent a year teaching before going to work for 3M in the Twin Cities. His career with 3M spanned over 42 years. He worked mostly with large computer systems as a computer programmer, system programmer and configuration specialist for 3M’s data centers. After his retirement, he moved back to Brooten, where he enjoyed golfing and participating in various community and church activities.
John was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He sang in the church choir for many years, served on the church council, and was Trinity’s representative on the Glenwood Retirement Village Board. He also was a longtime member of Prairie View Golf Course, where he served as treasurer for over 20 years. Most recently, he was on the Board of Directors for the Brooten Community Foundation, where he also served as treasurer.
John is survived by his brother’s three children, Peter Imsdahl of Germany, Kari Thaemert of Carver, and Melissa (David) White of Anoka; three cousins, Joanne Fauskee of Brooten, Robert Imsdahl of New London, and Montelle Imsdahl of Buffalo, along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; and three stillborn brothers.
