June Olava Rosten was born on June 6, 1927 to John and Julia (Swenson) Rosten on their farm in Minnewaska Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was one of seven children born to the couple. She was baptized “Olava June” on July 10, 1927, at Indherred Lutheran Church by Pastor Gerhard Forde who also confirmed her on March 22, 1942. June attended country school at District 33 through the 8th grade and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1945. While in high school, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school to second graders at Indherred Church. After graduation she pursued a career in teaching, first completing one year of Normal Training in Glenwood and then earning an Associate in Education certificate from St. Cloud State Teacher’s College. She then began her teaching career and, at the same time, started taking classes at the University of Minnesota, aspiring to earn a bachelor’s degree. That goal was met when she graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Her career in teaching spanned 40 years, the last 33 of which were spent teaching at Mounds View public schools, from which she retired. In March of 1964, June became a charter member of Pi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, an international organization of women educators. She attained 50 years of membership in the sorority in March of 2014.

June was married to Harold Douglas Nicholson of Minneapolis at Indherred Church on June 15, 1968. They made their home in Shoreview. June and Harold had a love for dogs and over the course of their time together they raised six Scottish Terriers. After her retirement, June volunteered as an usher at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis for a number of years. She was also involved in doing altruistic work at nursing homes and other places in her community. June was a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Mounds View. There she participated in various Bible studies, served as a greeter, and was active in helping with smorgasbords, furnishing food for funerals, quilting, and other church activities. After her retirement, June also enjoyed crafting. She loved to do cross-stitch, hardanger, needlepoint, embroidery, and paint. Many of her projects became gifts for friends and family. June liked to start each morning with coffee and the crossword puzzle in her daily newspaper.

Harold and June shared 37 years of marriage before his death in 2006. June moved to Glenwood in 2015 to be closer to family. She most recently resided at Glenwood Retirement Village. She passed away there on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the age of 94. Throughout June’s life her focus was on faith, family, friends and Country. She was fond of saying, “Before you go to bed, give your troubles to God, He will be up all night anyway.” She also embraced the well-known Serenity Prayer: God grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change, the COURAGE to change the things I can, and the WISDOM to know the difference.

June is survived by two sisters, Helen Hagen of Glenwood and Timmie (Peder) Baukol of Starbuck; a sister-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Edwin) Rosten of Glenwood; many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Julia Rosten; her husband, Harold Nicholson, and his parents, Harold and Alys; four siblings, Olava Rosten (in childhood), Evelyn (Gordon) Finstad, Edwin Rosten, and Norman (Grace) Rosten; sister-in-law, Marilyn Marczek Halverson; and brother-in-law, Virgil Hagen.
