Karen Disrud Obituary

Karen L. Disrud, age 60, of Glenwood, died Thursday, January 19, 2023, at her son's home in Glenwood, in the care of her family and Glacial Ridge Hospice. A memorial service celebrating Karen's life will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, January 26th at Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Rev. Joel Rolf officiating. The service will be livestreamed (below the obituary by the service times, click on the link) Visitation will be from 5 - 7 P.M. on Wednesday, January 25th, at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will resume on Thursday morning at the church beginning at 10 A.M. Inurnment will be at Minnewaska Lutheran Cemetery, rural Starbuck, in the summer. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Karen LaVerne Wesen was born on July 18, 1962, in Starbuck, MN. She was the sixth of eight children born to parents Eldon R. and LaVerne (Hanse) Wesen. Karen grew up in Starbuck, where she was baptized and confirmed at Minnewaska Lutheran Church and attended Starbuck schools. After graduating from Starbuck High School in 1980, she completed the Business Secretarial program at Willmar Vocational Technical College in Willmar.

On December 12, 1981, Karen was united in marriage to Gregg A. Disrud, of Starbuck, at Minnewaska Lutheran Church. The couple first made their home in St. Louis Park then Hopkins and Rockford before settling in Glenwood, where they raised their family of three boys, Nathan, Brian, and Eric. Karen and Gregg later divorced.

At the time of Karen’s death, she had been employed as a Case Aide/HR Technician for Western Prairie Human Services in Glenwood for one year. She had previously worked for many years at American Solutions for Business in Glenwood and at Pope County in Human Resources.

Karen’s favorite times were those spent with family, especially with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, shopping, and tending her flower garden. She had a lifelong love for dogs and was proud of her grand pups, Tank, Mack and Chevelle.

Karen had a big heart, kind eyes and a warm smile. She will be remembered for her willingness to always want to help others.

Karen was diagnosed with lung cancer in August of 2022, after several months of doctoring for her symptoms. She pursued various courses of treatment before becoming a patient of Glacial Ridge Hospice in January of 2023. On Thursday, January 19, 2023, she passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Glenwood, surrounded by her family.

Karen is survived by her three sons, Nate (Danette) Disrud of Glenwood, Brian Disrud of Basin, WY, and Eric (Katie) Disrud of Glenwood; four grandchildren, Madisyn, Levi, Harper, and Ella Disrud; one sister, Kathy Wesen; six brothers, Jim (Julie) Wesen, Charles (Kim) Wesen, Roland (Monica) Wesen, John (Tricia) Wesen, Steven (Robyn) Wesen and Robert (Donna) Wesen; her former husband, Gregg Disrud; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and LaVerne Wesen.
