Lorna Gail Ward, daughter of Robert Duane and Merle Edith (Slagel) Ward, was born in Mound Township, near Luverne, MN, on February 23, 1931. She grew up on a farm in Rock County and graduated from Luverne High School. She worked at Rock County Bank for a year before her marriage to Ervin Cyrus Wharton on August 24, 1950. Following their wedding, Lorna and Ervin lived on a dairy farm north of Luverne, where they worked side by side to operate the farm. In December of 1968, the family moved to a farm south of Brooten in Kandiyohi County where they farmed until June of 1978 when they purchased a farm north of Sedan in Grove Lake Township, Pope County. Lorna and Ervin shared 56 years of marriage before his death in July of 2007. Lorna and her daughter Linda continued to live on the farm until October of 2022, when they moved to Glenwood.

Lorna’s hobbies included sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and counted cross-stitch. She enjoyed Sudoku puzzles, genealogy, and singing Christian music. During her years on the farm she loved to plant and nurture big flower gardens. She also regularly participated in Bible Study, did daily devotions, and enjoyed serving in various capacities at First Baptist Church in Glenwood, where she was a longtime member.

Lorna died at home, in Glenwood, under the care of family and Glacial Ridge Hospice, early on the morning of March 13, 2023. A woman with a gentle and quiet spirit, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will also be remembered for her talented needlework, gorgeous flower gardens, and most importantly, for her devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Lorna is survived by her four children, Gary (Barb) Wharton of Belgrade, Linda Wharton of Glenwood, Roger (Sarah) Wharton of Willmar, and Darla (Peter) Finke of Staples; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; one sister, Marlis Olson of Colorado Springs, CO; along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Duane and Merle Ward; her husband, Ervin Wharton; one brother, Ronald Ward; and one sister, Karen Ward.
