Marion DeKay Obituary

Marion DeKay, age 95, of Hibbing and formerly of Brooten, died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Guardian Angels Health and Rehab Center in Hibbing, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten with Pastor Steven Bovendam officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.

Marion Sagedahl was born on February 21, 1924. She grew up in the Brooten area, the third of five children born to Edward and Mary (Evenson) Sagedahl. She graduated from Brooten High School in 1943, where she was active in school and church choir and was a member of the high school drum and bugle corps. Having been raised during the Depression, Marion knew the meaning of hard work. She waitressed, worked manufacturing ammunition boxes during WWII, pressed shirts at a laundry for many years and most recently, worked the checkout at Jim’s Corner Market in Brooten.

After the war, Marion met and married Clayton DeKay and together they had three children, Dick, Lynn, and Mark. They lived briefly in Drake, ND and Willmar, MN, before moving to Cut Bank, MT for 12 years. In 1968, after she and Clayton divorced, Marion moved back to Brooten, where she lived until she was 92 years of age. At that time, with her health declining, she moved to Hibbing to be closer to family.

Marion was an avid baseball fan. She loved watching her sons play Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was a faithful Minnesota Twins fan. She was a quiet, soft-spoken lady who got along with everyone. She was very independent and worked hard all her life. She dearly loved her family, God and her Trinity Lutheran Church family. She was active in Joy Circle, quilting, and served on the board at Glenwood Retirement Home, and volunteered at Senior Dining. She loved listening to old-time music and dancing the Polka.

Marion will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. She passed away on December 1, 2019, at Guardian Angels Nursing home in Hibbing.

Marion is survived by her son, Richard DeKay of Cut Bank, MT; her daughter, Lynn (Daniel) Cooper of Pengilly, MN; four grandchildren, James (Rachel) Olson, Lyndsy (Jason) Plum, Dixie DeKay, and Suzy DeKay; five great-grandchildren, Aubri Olson, Gage Plum, Anthony DeKay, Tyber Chaplin, and Hudson DeKay; two sisters-in-law, Jane Sagedahl and Gail Anderson, both of Brooten; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary Sagedahl; her son, Mark DeKay; her former husband, Clayton DeKay; two sisters, Cordella (Gerhard) Ellingson and Clarice (Rueben) Ellingson; and two brothers, Sidney Sagedahl and Ronald Sagedahl.
