Mavis Arlene Thompson was born on April 16, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Edward and Jessie (Vanderberg) Boettcher. Mavis's early years were filled with the warmth of family and the strong values that would come to define her life. Mavis attended school in South Dakota and graduated from high school in June of 1949.
On September 12, 1953, Mavis was united in marriage with Ben Thompson in Sioux Falls. Together, they built a life filled with love and commitment in Glenwood. Mavis dedicated herself to creating a warm and welcoming home, becoming a homemaker whose care and attention to detail were evident in every aspect of her life.
Mavis will be fondly remembered for her beautifully kept farm and the pride she took in maintaining it with her three cherished John Deere lawn mowers. Her passion for lawn care was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of her dedication to her home and the community. Mavis's love for riding her lawn mower will be remembered as well as she often shared that she found it "totally refreshing and fun," mowing from morning to night whenever she had the chance. Which is why she always needed her lawn mower lights working. Her spirit of generosity extended beyond her home as she was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends in need, especially with their lawn care. She passed away peacefully at home on January 8, 2026.
Mavis is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mark and Kevin Thompson, Michelle Adams and Penny Whetzel, Carol Cowart, Herbie Thompson, Jr., Allen Seaman, Carol Hendric, Jan Seaman, Doug Boettcher, Judy Hopkin, Jeannie Anderson, David Denekamp, Don Denekamp, and Darlene Evans.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Edward and Jessie, her devoted husband, Ben, two brothers, Darrell and Rolland Boettcher, and a sister, Eleanor Seaman.
A private family graveside service with inurnment will be held at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
