Michael Lee Ward, age 46, of Sauk Centre, formerly of Brooten, died Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre following a lengthy illness. A gathering to celebrate Michael's life will be held on Friday, January 19th, at Marcia's Bar and Grill in Brooten, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a time of sharing favorite memories and stories about Michael, followed by visitation and fellowship with his family, running until 7:00 p.m. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Brooten.
Michael Lee Ward was born on May 4, 1977, in Glenwood, MN. He was the second of four children born to Kyle and Marie (Nelson) Ward of Brooten. Michael's early education took place in Brooten and then later, Sauk Centre, where he graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1996. Michael was a loud, opinionated, life of the party kind of guy, whose laugh was unforgettable. He was known for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh. After high school, Michael worked as a block tender for the Teamsters Union and did road construction with Mid-Continent Asphalt. Life took an unexpected turn for Michael in 2006 when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left him a paraplegic. However, his indomitable spirit shone through as he adapted to his new circumstances with grace and determination. Following intensive rehabilitation, Michael was able to live independently, drive a car, enjoy his many hobbies and work at Trucker's Inn truck stop and later found a passion for real estate, becoming a realtor and property manager.
Michael was an enthusiastic fan of both the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. He had an appreciation for nice cars and owned a Chevy Camaro that he enjoyed driving. He was an avid pool player, a cunning poker opponent, and an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting in his youth. He especially loved deer season as his niece and nephews got old enough to join him in his customized deer stand and he got to share the excitement of hunting with them.
Michael is survived by his mother, Marie Triden of Willmar; four siblings, Christopher (Sheila) Ward of Spicer, Joshua Ward of Devils Lake, ND, Mary Beth (Lynn) Wold of Brooten, and Matthew (Heather Bonrud) Ward of Hancock. Michael was a fun and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, Kara Wold, Eli Wold, Avery Ward, Jase Ward, Jack Ward, Kyle Ward, and Kaylee Ward. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Kyle Ward; step-father, William Triden, step-mother, Sandra Ward, his maternal grandparents, Hjalmer and Dorothea Nelson, as well as his paternal grandparents, Galen and Lavonne "Bonnie" Ward.
Michael's journey through life was one of courage, laughter, and an abundance of friendships. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
