Obituary

Robert A. Huerkamp, age 66, of Starbuck, MN, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Glacial Ridge Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 12th, at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood, with Fr. Joe Vandeberg officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery at Sedan, near his parents and brother, at a later date. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Robert “Bob” A. Huerkamp, the son of Alvin George and Patricia (Blaskowski) Huerkamp, was born on June 18, 1956 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Bob was baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sedan, where he was a member. He lived with his family on their farm outside of Sedan until the age of 6, when he began receiving institutionalized care necessitated by a congenital intellectual disability.

Each summer while his parents were alive and living on the farm, Bob would return for a two week vacation where he enjoyed feeding the animals, helping in the field and making discoveries in the junk yard. His constant moving, smiling and pointing told everyone he was enjoying his time with family and taught everyone that all life is precious and different does not mean less. He was especially close to his mother and shined when she was around him.

Bob lived at different group homes and State hospital facilities over the years before moving to a residential home in Starbuck operated by Prairie Community Services, where he was very happy and received excellent care. He was well-liked, kind-hearted and fun-loving. Bob’s laughter and enjoyment of the simple things will be missed by his family, housemates and staff at his residence.

Bob passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital Emergency Room. The sadness and shock of Bob’s passing is eased by imagining the joy on his face when he discovered that there are no handicaps in heaven!

Bob is survived by four sisters, Rose (Gene) Martin of Hannawa Falls, NY, Maxine (Gary) Jacobson of Casper, WY, Diane (Andrew) Hite of San Antonio, TX, Carol (Michael) Kohlman of Murdock; and three brothers, Kenneth of Brooten, Gerald (Margie) of Glenwood, and William of Glenwood. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Patricia Huerkamp, a brother, John, a nephew, David Gerald Huerkamp, and a great niece, Swayzee Greenlee.
