Obituary

Sandy L. Rooney, age 74 of Sedan, MN died Thursday, August 5, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A private family graveside service will be held at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Sedan. Extended family and friends are invited to gather to remember Sandy on Friday, August 13th between Noon and 3 pm at Rooney’s Bar in Sedan. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Sandra Lee Tatalovich was born in Duluth, MN on January 14, 1947 to Nicholas and Angeline “Angie” (Zorich) Tatalovich. She graduated in 1965 from Morgan Park High School in Duluth.  A couple years later she married and had her first child. Sandy and her family then relocated to Brainerd, MN where her second child was born. In 1973, she and her husband purchased a bulk oil business in Glenwood, MN. Sandy assisted in operating the business out of their home, which allowed her to be a stay-at-home mom. During her 16 years in Glenwood she enjoyed raising her family, playing softball, bowling and golfing. After her children were out of the home her first marriage ended. Sandy saw her change in circumstances as an opportunity to better herself by furthering her education so she enrolled at Alexandria Technical College, where she earned a degree in Hotel/Motel/Restaurant Management. Over the next couple of decades, she held several job titles, including bookkeeper, customer service representative, assembly worker and business manager. One of those job opportunities took her to the small town of Sedan, where she fell in love; first with the town and its residents and eventually, with her second husband, Tony Rooney. They married June 30, 1995. For the last 16 years, Sandy and Tony have owned and operated Rooney’s Bar.

Sandy had a special gift for making people laugh, feel welcome and included when in Sedan. In recent years, one of the things that brought Sandy joy was entertaining. She was a gracious hostess and loved bringing her friends and family together over meals she prepared.  She was a wonderful cook, known especially for her home-style meals.

Sandy was first diagnosed with cancer in 2010. With determination and grace, she valiantly fought the disease. Early on the morning of Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Cloud Hospital, her journey ended. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Sandy is survived by her husband of 26 years, Tony; her children, Bill (Christina) Kellogg of Lodi, WI and her daughter, Kristen (Kyle) Hanson of New London; her grandchildren, Camryn, Jordyn and Zander Kellogg and Kelsie Hanson; sisters-in-law, Lenore Tatalovich, Carol Rooney, Marilynn Lysen, and Jean Rooney; brothers-in-law, Ron (Ilona) Rooney, Tom Rooney, and Tim Rooney; along with cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Rodney Tatalovich; and brother-in-law, Dan Rooney.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, contributions to Glacial Ridge Hospice in memory of Sandy are preferred. Glacial Ridge Hospice, 219 1st St SE, Glenwood, MN 56334.
