Shirley Hegg Obituary

Shirley E. Hegg, age 90 of Glenwood died Thursday, November 4, 2021 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Scandia Lutheran Church in rural Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Rolling Forks Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Shirley Elaine Hegg was born March 1, 1931 in Swift Falls, Minnesota. She was the ninth of twelve children born to Simon J. and Eunice (Peterson) Kolstad. She grew up in Swift Falls and was a member of Rolling Forks Lutheran Church. She attended school in Benson, Minnesota and graduated from Benson High School in 1949.

On July 28, 1962, Shirley was united in marriage to Casper M. Hegg at Rolling Fork Lutheran Church. They made their home in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The couple was blessed with one son, Michael. Shirley was a loving homemaker and caregiver. In 1972, Shirley and Casper moved back to the Glenwood area. When back in Glenwood, Shirley worked as a nurse’s aide and became a member of Scandia Lutheran Church. Shirley and Casper shared 38 years of marriage before Casper died December 10, 2000.

Although only one immediate son, the house south of Glenwood was frequently the site of family get togethers, an impromptu day care and summer camp for nieces and nephews; a bustle of activity. Shirley was always the first to reach out and go above and beyond with a strength and resolve seen in very few. Shirley enjoyed gardening and canning, but she especially loved spending time with her family. She worked full-time as an in home caregiver until she was 86 years old. When Shirley needed help with her daily care she moved into the Glenwood Retirement Village and resided there until she passed away on November 4, 2021.

Shirley is survived by her son, Michael Hegg of Portland, OR, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Casper; and eleven siblings: Corah Goff, Omar Kolstad, Ervin Kolstad, Viola Callinan, LuVerne Kolstad, Sheman Kolstad, Lucille Hendrickson, baby boy Kolstad, Kathleen Lagred, Robert Kolstad and Verna Kolstad.
