Obituary

Sonja M. Hawn, age 85 of Sedan, died Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany after a brief illness. A memorial service celebrating Sonja's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25th at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church in Terrace with Pastor Brenda Boogren officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Sedan. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Sonja Mae Hawn, the daughter of Lawrence and Belva (Larson) Hesse was born February 1, 1938 in Brooten, Minnesota. She grew up in the Brooten area where she attended school. Sonja was married young, briefly moved out of state and then back to Minnesota. She was blessed with four children. She later divorced and moved back to the Brooten/Sedan area where she met Robert Hawn.

On July 1, 1967, Sonja was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Hawn. Sonja and Bob raised their family in Sedan and were blessed with two more children. The couple spent many years as members of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshing Reunion in Rollag, MN and Stearns County Pioneer Club in Albany, MN.

Sonja was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed knitting, sewing, candle-wicking and embroidery. She was also an amazing cook. Some of her specialties were fried chicken, (which she used to make every Sunday) homemade pies and Lefse.

Sonja and Bob shared 39 years of marriage before Bob died July 10, 2006. After Bob passed away, Sonja continued to live in Sedan. She was a member of the Sedan City Council and Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church.

A special thanks to Sonja’s wonderful neighbors in Sedan, especially John & Nancy Claussen and Keith Kirchhevel for the love and care they have shown her over the many years since Bob passed away. And to John Aubart and family for doing her lawn mowing and snow removal. She could not have lived alone in her home in Sedan for so many years without all of them. Also, thanks to the Staff at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany, especially Brenda Hawn for caring for her these last couple weeks, and to the Nurses at Moments Hospice.

Sonja is survived by her children: Robin (David) Hubbard of Glenwood, Kristy (Doug) Miller of Coon Rapids, Jeff (Sandra) Brooks of Wichita Falls, TX, Jon Brooks of Princeton, MN, Eric (Brenda) Hawn of Holdingford, MN and Amy (Dave) Klema of Kimball, MN; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Ann Eskelson of Terrace and LaDonna Larson of Aitkin, MN; step-siblings, Karen Aslagson, Carol Terhaar, Ronnie Landwehr, Bev Schomberg and Jerry Landwehr; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Hesse, mother and step-father, Belva & Gene Landwehr, husband, Robert Hawn, and daughter-in-law, Kim Brooks.
