Vicky Sagen Obituary

Vicky L. Sagen, age 67, of Alexandria, MN, and formerly of Glenwood, died Monday, September 21, 2020, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 25th at Barsness Lutheran Church, rural Glenwood, with Pastor Brenda Boogren officiating. Visitation will be at the church, one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Vicky Lynn Hastings was born in Oakland, California on June 4, 1953 to Carol (Melby) and Roger Hastings. She was baptized at St. Ansgaar Lutheran Church in San Francisco. When she was 13 months old her family moved back to Minnesota, eventually settling in Osseo.

Vicky was confirmed at Advent Lutheran Church in Osseo, where she and her family were charter members. She taught Sunday school, was active in Girl Scouts, and participated in drama while in high school.

Upon graduating from Osseo High School in 1972, Vicky attended nearby Golden Valley Lutheran College and North Hennepin Community College before transferring to Moorhead State Teacher’s College where she earned a degree in Early Childhood Development. She spent the summer after graduation working in the Narnia Children’s Program at Holden Village in the Cascade Mountains near Chelan, WA.  That fall she worked at the Home School in Sauk Centre, MN, and when there was an opening, she became head pre-school teacher at the Child Care Center in Morris, MN.

While living in Morris, Vicky met and dated Lynwood Sagen. The two were married at Barsness Lutheran Church in rural Glenwood in 1982. They made their home in Morris until 1987, when they moved to Glenwood. Vicky and Lynwood enjoyed traveling together, with their favorite destinations being Winnipeg, MB, San Francisco, and the North Shore of Minnesota. They were active members of Barsness Lutheran Church and served as delegates to several church synod conventions. Vicky was also Barsness Lutheran’s delegate to Luther Crest Bible Camp for many years.

While living in Glenwood, Vicky took training to become a Nurse’s Aide after which she spent many years working at Glenwood Retirement Village.

After Lynwood passed away in 2005, Vicky continued to reside in Glenwood. She took frequent trips to visit her brother, John, and his family in Sandpoint, ID, and several Alaskan cruises with her mother, other relatives, and her good friend, Carolyn.

Vicky was always active in the churches where she was a member, whether as a reader, teacher or an officer in various Christian women’s groups. Most recently she was a member at Living Word Lutheran Church in Alexandria. While she was residing in Glenwood, she was a part of a Birthday Club that included her friends, Donna, Lori, Marian and Connie. She always looked forward to getting together with Donna, Loren, Lorraine, Jeff and her mom to play apples to apples and celebrating her birthdays with Teri and Chris.

In 2015, Vicky and her mom, Carol, purchased a townhome in Alexandria. She continued to reside there with her mother until the time of her death. Vicky enjoyed their new home and the new friendships that were established during her time in Alexandria, especially the coffee group she and Carol regularly met with consisting of their good friends, Kathy Lorene, Mardith, and Marlys.

Vicky passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020, following a lengthy illness. She was deeply loved and is already very much missed!

Vicky is survived by her mother, Carol Fingerson of Alexandria; her brother, John (Nancy) Hastings of Sandpoint, ID; one niece, Logan Hastings; one nephew, Noah Hastings (who taught Vicky how to whistle!); two step-brothers, Brian (LaVonne) Fingerson and Bruce (Melissa) Fingerson; two step-sisters, Ann (DuWayne) Brandt and Ellen Fingerson; her cousins, Linda Nease, Carolyn Holman and Rob Melby and her loving cat, Miss Molly.

Vicky was preceded in death by her father, Roger Hastings; her husband, Lynwood Sagen; her step-father, Earl Fingerson; and an uncle, Bob Melby.
